Cemeteries
There are three cemeteries in Shalersville Township:
Hillside Cemetery and Riverside Cemetery on State Route 303,
and Fairview Cemetery on the corner of State Route 14 and Lake Rockwell Road

CEMETERY RULES

Burial Plots:
Burial plots must be purchased from Shalersville Township. Purchaser will receive a deed for their plot and it becomes their property subject to deed restrictions and the rules of the cemetery and any amendments to these rules.
Burial of other than the owner(s) and their immediate family in a burial plot is not permitted.
Owners may not sell their plots to any outside sales, only back to the township at the original purchase price.
Burial Requirements:
A two (2) day notice is required for any burial in Shalersville Township Cemeteries.
All burials will be in a suitable casket and vault (see Casket and Vault for requirements).
Ashes from Cremations will be buried in a suitable Urn and Vault.
There will be no above ground burials in Shalersville Township Cemeteries.
Only one body may be buried in each plot.
Only human remains may be buried in Shalersville Township Cemeteries (15 April 2008).
Caskets:
Must be a recognized Casket of current construction.
Caskets must be placed in a concrete, top seal, Vault for burial
Cremations:
A two (2) day notice will be required for the interment of ashes in Shalersville Township Cemeteries.
Ashes must be buried in a suitable Urn and Vault
A maximum of 4 Urns may be placed on top of one Vault or in one plot.
A cremation may be added to an existing burial if the Sexton determines there is sufficient room and depth.
Dates and Times:
Normal times for funerals will be between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM week days
Saturday and Sunday burials will be between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM at the rate set out in the Fee Schedule.
There will be NO burials on the following Special days: New Years Day, Easter Sunday, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.

Fees are contained in the Cemetery Fee Schedule and are reviewed annually by the Township Trustees.
Fee schedules are available from the Sexton or Clerk.
Scheduling:
A two (2) day notice is required for any burial in Shalersville Township Cemeteries
All scheduling should be done with the Sexton or his designee.
Any special requests should be arranged as far in advance as possible.
Disinterment’s will be scheduled with weather and ground conditions being considered as major factors

Footers for headstones are usually poured twice annually, usually in May and September.
Footers will not be poured until the second pouring after the grave is closed to allow for settling.
In the event that a monument will require a footer beyond the capability of the Township, the Township will hire a firm to prepare the footer to the monument company's, specifications or the Townships Specifications, whichever is greater, and bill the responsible party for the costs incurred.
There will be no more than one (1) headstone per grave, additional markers will be allowed if they are either: (a) attached to the primary stone, or (b) flush mounted in the ground
Maximum headstone size; single 42" by 18", double 84" by 18", centered on grave(s)
There will be NO full grave markers.

Cemeteries are open from Dawn till Dusk.
Funerals should be scheduled between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM, exceptions will incur additional charges to cover the additional manpower expenses. (see Dates & Times)
Landscaping:
All landscaping and maintenance will be performed by Township Employees or Hires. Unless written permission is granted by the sexton or trustees.
Flower planting will only be permitted within 12 inches on the burial side of the primary Headstone.
All seasonal ornaments and/or decorations shall be removed within 2 months.
Footers and Headstones:

Prohibitions:
NO motorized or wheeled vehicles or toys, of any kind, will be permitted in the cemeteries except for passenger or funeral vehicles on the paved roads or the equipment of the Township or its Hires.
No participant in a funeral or visitor to the cemeteries shall cause a scene or disturbance. Persons doing so will be directed to leave.
No fences, stones, edging, flowers, trees, shrubs, benches, or other obstructions shall be placed around any grave or anywhere in the cemetery without specific written permission.
The cemeteries are not playgrounds and are not to be used for playing games or other such activities.

Vaults:
Vaults usable in Shalersville Cemeteries must meet the following criteria:
1. Must be constructed of Concrete
2. Must be of the top seal type and
3. Must be water tight.
